VALUES INTEGRATION THROUGH PHYSICAL EDUCATION

-

BERNARD M. RIVERA

Physical activities and sports are undeniably key phenomena in our modern society. They are basically present and part in everyone’s life. It is in the aspect that as we approach the 21st century, physical education teachers are challenged to strengthen the teaching of values in their physical education classes

Apart from students who are very excited during their physical activities. It is very essential that we teach more than knowledge, skills and strategies. It should be a source of cooperation, acceptance, respect for self and others. In like manner, it also generate mental health, concentration and positive mood.

Teaching have a stronghold among their students and therefore, are deemed necessary to lead by example in demonstrating appropriate behavior. In fact, role modelling is an asset that a teacher can bring to the classroom everyday if he/ she wants to achieve the desired outcome in the same way.

The renowned John Dewey, in the early days of public education, once said that to depend over on subject knowledge and methods was fatal to the best interest of education. He emphasized rather the need for teacher for the cultivation of a mindset , self-reflective directed towards instilling reflectivity, inquiry and capacity for a moral and good judgment on the part of students.

Hence, teachers must explain to students at the beginning of school year, and periodically, through the year, the positive characteristics that they must possess as they learn. — oOo— The author is SST III at Betis High School
