VALUES BEYOND EDUCATION

-

Studies have shown that for some students, achievement or happiness is more important than caring for others. This is quite alarming, and should receive deep concern from teachers and educational leaders.

What this study shows is students’lack of empathy. There is a need for schools to examine their priorities and formulate programs and curricula designed to increase student empathy.

There are a number of books and other material that can be used as guides. These approaches suggest ways that schools can effectively promote empathy among students. Of course, values education starts at home and early-childhood parenting is a much more powerful variable.

Another thing which schools and parents must also discourage children from adapting is the attitude that our society is one wherein “achievement” – whether wealth or status – is more valued than empathy.

If we wan our students to be successful in the future, we must emphasize the need for the right qualities and skills. We may be able to produce students who are very smart and talented and driven, but we don’t want them to be anxious, timid, and lost.

They should be able to have a high level of intellectual curiosity and a sense of purpose, not heading meekly in the same direction. They should be great at what they’re doing, but they must know why they’re doing it.

Values go beyond the four corners of the classroom. Educators must impart to their students that we must not place so much value on achievement over caring for others. Parents and teachers alike have their respective roles in nurturing the necessary skills for students to survive. Let’s raise awareness and foster learning of more altruistic values.
