SMART MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES
As stated by Peter F. Drucker, “Management is about human beings. Its task is to make people capable of joint performance, to make their strengths effective and their weaknesses irrelevant.” Performance management is essential to achieving an organization’s mission statement and business goals, and also in attracting, retaining, and motivating qualified employees. There are many benefits and reasons why an organization should execute a performance management system. Performance appraisals establish the basis for qualifying, recognizing, and rewarding employee contributions.
A performance management system should consist of planning, monitoring, reviewing and evaluating (Hrcouncil.ca, 2015). During the planning phase management should identify, clarify and agree upon expectations of the employee. Also, in this phase management needs to determine how results will be measured, agree on the monitoring process and document the plan for performance management. Furthermore, this step is imperative for management to identify and ensure the performance objectives are explicitly stated to the employee. In the development of this phase management would use an efficient goal tracking system called SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time Bound). This system will make goal setting more specific, measurable, and time-bound which will result in the ability to make development on the goal and track the progress of the employee’s objectives.
Many people face the troubling issue of time management. In most cases the lack of time someone has to complete a task is due to the lack of prioritizing. Others have trouble tackling daily task because of the fact that they try to take on too many task at one time, and finally there are some people that just waste their time doing nothing just because of pure laziness. Now more than ever time is becoming one of our most valued resources that are wasted because people don’t know how to properly manage their time wisely. In every aspect of life people are doing things that really have no value at all. Walking through a dorm on a week night you can find several students sitting around playing video games when at the same time they have a paper or assignment due the next day, you can also find employees sitting around the office playing solitaire or writing emails while productive work should be getting done. Time management is a skill that can be learned, and when done so can make life less stressful and pr oduct i ve.
Everyone has different task that needs to be done differently. In high school and in college many students are required to earn money in order to help finance their social lives and education. These same students spend time with extracurricular activities such as clubs and athletic teams that take away from time that could be spent doing productive work. After you include jobs and activities a social life and time to relax should also be included in a person’s daily schedule. After all these things are added up there really isn’t much time to do much of anything.
This is just an example of how ones time can be spent. In most cases someone that has completed their education and holds down a full time job this example wouldn’t be as pertinent. But that still doesn’t mean that people in the working world have overcome the challenge of managing their time successfully. — oOo— The author is SST I at Duquit High School, Division of Mabalacat City
