TECHNOLOGY: A VITAL PIECE FOR EDUCATION

-

MARIO S. DAVID, JR.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word “technology”? In the definition of “technology” in merriam-webster.com, it is a manner of accomplishing a task using technical processes, methods, or knowledge.

The use of technology has spread from the mere industrial setting to more vast and diverse playing field, most of which are benefiting from the great assistance it provides.

In my experience as part of an academic institution, I have seen the great importance of the use of technology in our schools. In my point of view, the use of technology in education benefits both teachers and the students.

Perhaps the most obvious benefit of technology for teachers and students is the internet. Though I would agree that print materials like newspapers, journals and most especially books are indispensable and essential, people always on the go can lean on the internet, wherein they don’t have to spend a lots of time in the library just to get the pertinent information they need. With the internet, knowledge and information is available at any time in just a few clicks, saving precious time which can be used to perform other worthwhile tasks.

With countless number of materials and resources which are available in the internet and computer applications, teachers save a lot of time in preparation of their lessons and presentations which can be saved or shared online to collaborate with other people to refine it to provide the best for their students.

The use of technology like projectors, smart TV’s, computers and speakers enhances the traditional way of teaching. Teachers can explain complex topics with Audio and Visual Presentations which encourages active participation and improves the level of comprehension of students in the classroom, as studies would reflect, since more senses are being stimulated.

With the technologies and information available online at anytime, students can learn in their own pace and collaborate with other students or people to share and acquire knowledge and information. Using of technology in the classroom also develops skills that students can use like researching and preparation of presentations.

If everyone is willing to embrace the use of technology in education, students will develop the skills, knowledge and experience that will prepare them for the future. Of course, certain guidelines and standards have to be set, but it is undeniable, that when used correctly and judiciously, the contribution of preparing students for the future is indeed vital.

As Jenny Arledge said, “Technology can become the “wings” that will allow the educational world to fly farther and faster than even before – if we will allow it”. — oOo— The author is Computer Technician at University of the Assumption
