SM City Marilao brightenscommunity with LED light donation

-

STA. CRUZ, PAOMBONG- Bringing light to dark homes, SM City Marilao recently donated over a hundred energy-saving lightings to one of the coastal communities in Paombong, Bulacan.

The Sta. Cruz community is a remote coastal island in Bulacan that has intermittent and limited access to lighting and electricity. Because of its geographical location, many households rely on expensive incandescent light and hazardous light alternatives such as candles and kerosene l am p s.

According to Sta. Cruz Parish Pastoral Council Co-chair Linda Bagtas, the lack of sufficient lighting in the community creates significant challenges in the areas of health and education, especially in livelihood. With the donation from SM City Marilao, residents will have brighter homes and save money as LED bulbs use at least 75 percent less energy and last 15 times longer than a traditional incandescent bulb.

“Malaking tulong yung donation kasi makakatipid kami sa kuryente at mas maliwanag yung ilaw kumpara sa normal na ginagamit naming,” she shared.

The energy-efficient LED bulbs donation will likewise help in enhancing the livelihood projects of the community that include production of pickled sea purslane or atsarang dampalit and processed fish products.

“Because the community uses solar energy solutions in their livelihood projects, the donation of SM City Marilao will definitely help in reducing energy consumption and operational costs,” said Commission on Action Coordinator Joseph Batac.

Apart from lighting homes, the Sta. Cruz community also plans to give LED lights to help fishermen increase their catch while lessening the risk of acci d en t s.

The LED light donation is a post-follow up action of the Earth Day celebration in SM City Marilao.

As recalled, eLluminArt is an ecofriendly light art installation that uses innovative approaches focusing on the theme of recycling, reducing energy consumption and sustainability.

The light art installation was solar-powered and created with energy-efficient LED lighting as well as recycled materials recovered from the Marilao River clean up drive last March 2017.

The LED light donation was made possible through a partnership with the Diocese of MalolosCommission on Social Action. (Press Release)
