Mayor, GNC Batch ’72 host tree planting in Guagua town
GUAGUA— The Municipal Government of Guagua and the Guagua National Colleges (GNC) Batch 1972 led the tree planting activity at LM Subdivision here on Tuesday.
Mayor Dante Torres said that the tree planting is in partnership with the GNC Batch 1972 as a way of bring awareness to the need to start green initiatives for the town which is a catch basin of flood water from northern towns during the rainy season.
He added that his administration had been focused on implementing measures to mitigate the effects of climate change in the town and make it climate change adapted.
Torres and the GNC Batch 1972 planted dozens of various hardwood trees for the said project. The mayor added that recently, the town had initiated mangrove tree planting along the town’s bay area to protect the town from high tide waters. He added that Guagua was once host to vast mangrove forests along its banks but these have been severely depleted overtime.
The mangrove trees that stretch a couple of kilometers, are expected to bring back and rehabilitate aquaculture along Guagua town’s waterways going to the bay. Mangroves are natural habitats for fish and other marine animals, the mayor said.
Torres said that they are also set on implementing other tree planting and greening activities in other areas of the town, especially near the town proper which is the most urbani zed.
