A CHANCE THROUGH ALTERNATIVE LEARNING SYSTEM

-

EDGAR S. TANGLAO

Education is of vitality. It is a treasure that once owned, would have a security to live a more comfortable life. However, in a developing country like ours, not all people could attend school due to many factors, one of which is poverty.

Many people, even though basic education is given for free, do not have the chance to finish school and earn a diploma. For, there are some children who would rather help their parents earn a living, sell commodities, or take care of their siblings instead of being at school.

But since our government recognizes the importance of being literate… it is indeed an opportunity for those out of school youths and even adults to be given the chance to go back to school and earn a diploma.

Though education is for all, and anyone can attend or go back to formal education, it is understandable that over-aged individuals find it awkward or even inconvenient on their part to be in the classrooms where they would unavoidably feel different.

Thus, through the program of the government, they would be able to attend school once more, in a less taxing yet meaningful way. And, if they would work hard and be determined to pursue their studies, it shall be possible once they passed the assessment or exam.

What is also good about this program is having a qualified mobile teacher who shall come to school near the students thus, distance wouldn’t be a problem. The hours that he shall dedicate to teach these ALS students shall be meaningful enough to equip them with the skills they need, thus making them have a positive view in learning and succeeding.

As they say, everybody deserves a second chance. There is no reason for us to remain illiterate. Let us value education as this remains a key to success. — oOo— The author is Education Program Specialist II-ALS, Department of Education, Mabalacat City
