Angeles council okays OFW perks ordinance
ANGELES CITY — The Sangguniang Panlungsod has approved an ordinance giving benefits to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the city.
Councilor Amos Rivera, proponent of the ordinance, said that Ordinance 407 Series of 2007 (An Ordinance Providing Discounts and Other Incentives to Migrant Workers And Their Families In Angeles City) was passed last Tuesday.
According to Rivera, the Migrant Workers Incentives Ordinance will give special discounts to OFWs and members of their families to participating establishment like restaurants, malls, recreation facilities, drug stores, groceries and others.
“Good news po sa lahat ng OFWs and their families. Approved na po OFW ordinance na inauthor ng inyong abang lingkod. Sa ordinansa pong ito ay magbibigyan ng discounts ang mga OFW at pamilya nila sa mga accredited establishments dito sa lungsod ng Angeles,” Rivera said.
The city government, through its Public Employment and Services Office (PESO), is set to coordinate with barangay officials for the issuance of OFW identification cards, according to Rivera.
The beneficiaries will then present their IDs to accredited establishment when buying food, medicines and others, the councilor said.
“Ang kanilang mga OFW IDs ang patunay sa pagbibigay ng discounts sa mga bibilhin nilang pagkain, gamut at iba pa,” Rivera said.
The official thanked his colleagues in the city council for supporting the ordinance.
Migrant workers have long been referred to as modern day heroes in recognition of their role on strengthening the country’s economy, Rivera said.
The local government acknowledges the OFWs’ contribution to sustain the Philippines’foreign reserves, he added.
