Helping seniors learn new technology at SM

-

Teaching seniors how to use computers, tablets and smartphone devices is one way of helping them to keep up with technological needs. Through the SM Cares program SM Olongapo recently conducted a mentoring activity for the seniors called “oldies but techies,” an annual program that teaches senior citizens the ease and functionality of modern technology and social networking.

“At my age, I still want to learn new things especially on the latest gadgets,” said Jesus Tiberio, 84 ,one of the participants who still interested in joining the technology revolution so he can keep up with his kids and grandkids.

“The Office of Senior Citizen’s Affairs (OSCA) is very happy to be one of the partners of SM in this endeavor, the seniors as well are lucky to have been chosen as the recipient of this project,” said Rico Diaz, OIC, OSCA.

The tech tenants’teaching format was easy: they lead the TECH training with their own presentations, after which they addressed the seniors questions with prizes and give aways. Common issues involved uploading photos to a computer, fine-tuning a smartphone’s settings, operating Cloudfone lite senior phone with SOS emergency button and social media accounts.

Some of the tenants who have mentored in the said event include Jerome Layug of Guanzon discussed topics on Operating System- Android System; Jayann Marfil of Vivo- Features of Vivo; Jonley Solomon of Oppo; Rostelan Guinto of Fonerange and Patrick Uy of MemoXpress- Social Media Application

Teaching technology to older generations is mutually beneficial. Having an open mind that everyone learns in a different way and to have patience in the process of learning.

Through the Elderly Care Program of SM Cares, SM proves that there is life after retirement, SM host activities that promote healthy lifestyle and provide trainings for the elderly, from information technology to livelihood and works on ensuring that senior citizens are well-integrated in the community.
