The great levelers

-

WE HAVE HEARD AND SEEN the destructions caused in Texas and, of late, Florida in the United States and the Carribeans through massive floods and relentless torrential rains.

What a pitiful sight to behold residents in those areas dislocated and eventually moved to higher grounds. And to think they reside in the most powerful and influential country in the world, the United States of America.

I thought they (the Americans) were excellent in disaster preparedness but the volume of rain and the merciless gustiness and winds are too much for their sophisticated preparat i ons.

And so, we’ve witnessed the force of nature applied negatively and destructively.

We are no match to the force and power of nature. It can definitely wipe out infrastructure and other man-made structures in one blow!

Another kind of levelers are the strong earthquakes like the one which hit Turkey, Chile, Peru and lately Mexico City. We remember also the destrucive tremor which created havoc in Leyte, Bohol and other parts of the Philippines.

In all of these, we have been left clueless, if not helpless.

Here in our country, the war on drugs espoused by President Duterte is some sort of a leveler as it aims to decimate the population inhabited by bad elements. The mortality rate of said campaign is high and there is no saying that the said mortality rate will go down to a slower rhythm as the President voices out his resolve to kill drug offenders at each venue where he speaks.

No wonder the Catholic Church has registered its strong protests over the continuous killing rampage. Other human rights groups have tendered their strong objections.

***** Can a contract be abruptly rescinded without any legal or factual basis? This is the case of the Mabalacat City College President, Dr. Carmelita P. Sotto who has been informed that her services will be terminated before her term ends in August 2018 yet. The city Legal Officer, prodded perhaps by the lawyer who was an officer at MCC before he was sacked for insubordination and other offenses and a female political opportunists who has been putting her weight on some city officials, has issued a letter to

Dr. Sotto. Expect legal skirmishes between this legal officer and the college president who has not been formally charged of criminal offenses to warrant her removal from office.

***** Before this legal officer ever issues letters, he should study the matter very carefully and research on evidence to support his allegations. That is the duty of a lawyer, no more no less. There is no room for bias or for hurried pronunciations.
