Mommy’s love

- MICHAEL DEL ROSARIO

A MOTHER’S love is unconditional.

I do not remember having wronged my mother in any big memorable way. Neither have we ever had any major misunderstanding or miscommunication. Looking back, I know that even if I would have hurt “Mommy”, as we call her, she would have forgiven me easily, and her love for me would not have diminished one bit. Perhaps, disappointed in me, but loved me less, I cannot imagine. Mommy’s love for me and for each of my siblings was simply unconditional, sacrificial, and overflowing.

No wonder Jesus used a mother’s love to “measure” or compare the love He has for each of us in Isaiah 49:15. “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!”

Mommy taught me the way to Jesus, thru Mama Mary. She brought me close to her and to her Son.

She had a big heart. People would frequently tell me of her loving and generous acts of kindness. She had a special heart for the poor and the blind. Mommy was 87 with a zest for life. A bad slip and fall that caused a concussion on her head precipitated her death. It was so unexpected. But, just as there is a time to be born, there is a time to die.

Mommy passed away six years ago on September 24, 2011. It was a great and painful loss, surpassed only by the silent and controlled grief that she must have felt when her son, my older brother Dennis, passed away 26 years ago; and the pain from the demise of my dearest Papa, 16 years ago.

On your death anniversary Mommy, I thank you for having shown us what it meant to be loving, uncomplaining, giving, kind, and simple.

Thank you Lord for the years, months, days, and moments with her. No regrets, but how I wish I could have a few more treasured moments with her, even if only in my dreams.

My dearest friends, Is your mother still alive? You know what to do!

Enjoy her love. Express your love! Do it now!

Ephesians 6: 1-3 “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise- that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”
