PARENTS: SIGNIFICANT LEVERAGE AMONG OTHERS

- MONICA A. MADRONERO

Family is the smallest unit in the society. However, it is the greatest factor to shape the personality of an individual. Entering into the world of parenthood is happiness but entails many responsibilities.

Parents have great obligations to their children that commence from mother’s conception henceforth. Giving attention to the health of a mother and extra care to the unborn child will certainly affect the child’s growth and development and eventually after giving birth. As children grow, parents have crucial functions in order for a child to have a better future. One of the basic needs of children is to provide then education. Asian people especially Filipinos value the education of their children. It is something that cannot be stolen by anyone else and a key to land a job after graduation. That’s why; parents extend their sacrifices to the education of their children.

In line with this, there are many predictors that should be taken into consideration to the educational process of a child/ student. These are parents, teachers, peers and even school principals. Among these predictors, parents are the most influencers in the education of a child. This is according to the findings of my research conducted at San Luis, High School, San Luis, Pampanga. Parents are the most significant predictors of students’academic achievement from Grades seven to ten especially in Science and Technology, English and Mathematics subjects. Parents should give extra-quality time to their children at home even though they are too tired from work. This further implies that parents have a vital role in the success of their children. Parents must be actively and willingly involved themselves in any school-related activities of their children. Likewise, spend quality time for guiding and monitoring homework at home or in school, attend meetings, conferences and established open communication to teachers.

Aside from financial support, parents’“presence” matters most. It is worthy more worthy when parents show and let their children feel the love, care, comfort and attention. Truly, we dream of our children to be more motivated to finish the twelve-year journey schooling or until senior high school as required in the K to 12 Program of the Department of Education. Hence, it will be of great help for a child/ student to excel and obtain quality education and confidently compete in the workplace as they graduate in the tertiary level with the guidance and outmost support of their parents.
