GABAY GURO IN THE NORTH

- JOMELYN R. CRUZ

Teachers are honored for their steadfast commitment and dedication to service and over the years.

Because of this, the Department of Education is eyeing for the Gabay Guro, the education arm and flagship project of PLDT-Smart Foundation, to be also held in the regions for teachers who were unable to attend the festivity at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on September 17.

DepEd Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones said Gabay Guro should be witnessed by all teachers, and hopes that it will be held in the north.

PLDT and SMART Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Manny V. Pangilinan responded positively, and mentioned the possibility of carrying out a regional event .

Briones and Pangilinan both expressed their gratitude to teachers and emphasized that after all their hard work, they deserve this kind of tribute.

A decade of paying tribute For ten years, Gabay Guro has been advocating the welfare and development of teachers all throughout the country by spearheading various trainings, scholarships, and livelihood programs. It also leads the construction of housing and educational facilities, as well as the computerization and “broadbanding” (equipping a facility with broadband connection for internet access) of schools and learning centers to further capacitate teachers in raising the Filipino learners.

On top of these projects, Gabay Guro prepares an annual grand tribute for teachers where the latter can break away from the cacophony of work even for just a day. — oOo— The author is Teacher III at P. Luma Elementary School, Arayat, Pampanga
