A class act exhibited in SMB-Gin game

-

one bites the bust.

In a way, that’s the story of San Miguel Beer. The Beermen had appeared headed to the promised land aka Grand Slam.

Winning the first two conferences of the season, SMB became an instant candidate for the much-coveted Triple Crown.

Aft er overcoming some hi ccups along the way, the Beermen would finally slip. Trip?

The major meltdown was when SMB lost to Meralco in the final game of the eliminations.

The Beermen had definitely a won-game against the Bolts by building an 18-point bubble three-fourths into the contest.

For such a powerhouse squad like SMB, that margin was simply too huge to be overhauled. But, alas, it got razed to the ground. Meralco rallied and won, 104-101, sending SMB to sixth overall and facing that almost insurmountable twice-to-win obstacle against Barangay Ginebra.

True enough, SMB lost to Ginebra on Wednesday, bowing out of the PBA Governors’Cup and kissing its Triple Crown dreams goodbye.

When same kin go after each other’s neck in a most objective manner, as exemplified in the recent SMB-Ginebra match, why, that’s a class act without question.

In short, Ginebra, SMB’s sister-team, hammering home the last nail on the Beermen’s coffin is proof once more of the league’s unsullied credibility.

Anytime, here’s a glass to that. BACOLOD BASH The “Bacolod Night” yesterday at the extremely popular “Negros Trade Fair” on Glorietta 2 Mall in Makati. Flattered am I exceedingly as Bacolod Mayor Bing Leonardia, a dear friend from way back, has invited me and my family to the exclusive gathering. The Fair from Sept. 27 to Oct. 1 has been so thoroughly successful over the years that it is now observing its 32nd straight year. Mabuhay, gid!

CEBU CHEERS I raise a glass to Jumpin’ Justin Javelosa, who finally made it to the AllStar game today for Sacred Heart-Ateneo de Cebu after years of unrelenting struggle in the Cesafi basketball tournament.

Extremely shy as a kid, Justin has steadily grown to be a major cog in his team with a work ethic behind the tireless support of his Mom Mayra and Dad Chris (a La Salle star from another era).

I just love the couple as they cook the best goat dish (caldereta) from Sagay City, Chris’ roots. Cheers!
