TEACH-NO-LOGY?
LEMUEL S. DIZON
Technology offers a very diverse set of tasks and various ways in which learners can exhibit what they learned. It is also a motivational pro for educators in providing venue in which a broader array of learners can outclass. When technology is presented in a schoolroom, things change. The teacher’s part changes, too. As a result, learners find a sense of accomplishment when working with technology. Thus, learning with technology is bounded, hindered, and less absorbed.
Twenty-first century learners may be more eager about learning a topic if they are preparing a presentation or a video lesson instead of formal themes or any relatedwriting tasks. Conversely, they might devote more while and struggle on the presentation than studying the topic, and complete the task knowing very little about it. Therefore, learning is bounded.
Games on devices, text messaging, email, and social media all compete for students’ attention, taking that attention away from the learning on which they are supposed to be concentrating. The technology can also lead to dangerous situations as students can be exposed to inappropriate online materials or websites, cyber bullying, exposure to advertising, and contact with strangers. The technology-enabled teaching space offers entree to information, but it also gives more interferences, so learning is hindered.
Technology can also interrupt learning. An account from the United Kingdom revealed that learners who use computer and internet for more than four hours do not have the same sense of comfort as those who used that technology for less than an hour. One expert explained that with less physical contact, learners might have difficulty developing social skills and emotional reactions. With this, if learners are emotionally bothered and they are not socially developed, learning is less absorbed.
Technology is a treasured tool for teaching and learning process. Today’s students have tremendous opportunities to learn and to connect by using it. Nevertheless, with each advantage comes a potential cons. When we apprehend those outlays and can diminish them, we can keep the use of technology positive. Is technology in teaching can really give learners logy (logos in Latin, knowledge)?
