- BY ERIKA MARIEL B. GINES Sun.Star Staff Writer erika_gines@icloud .com

heard your mother say this at least once: “Kaka-computer mo ‘yan. Ayan na nga ba ang sinasabi ko, eh.” Yes, staring at your computer or smartphone screen for hours can cause short-term eyerelated problems.

According to a 2017 survey, Filipinos spend the most time on the Internet in the world, with a total average of 8.59 hours per day.

The survey revealed that Filipinos, especially millennials, are online for at least

5.23 hours via desktop or laptop, and 3.36 Hours via mobile device. It added that we also spend the most time on social media, with a total average of 4.17 hours a day.

Another intriguing and somewhat disturbing fact is that at least 90 percent of Filipino computer and electronic-gadget users are at risk of suffering from computer vision syndrome (CVS).

CVS ia set of eye problems due to prolonged use of a computer or any other digital device. A person who has CVS may experience eye strain, redness, blurred vision, dry eyes, headache and neck and shoulder pain.

Several factors increase the likelihood of CVS, including uncorrected vision problems, dry eyes, glares on the screen, poor lighting, poor posture and even the angle of the monitor. Another big factor is incorrect prescriptions.

If your work or lifestyle requires you to use the computer for hours, one of the best ways to avoid CVS is to follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at an object that’s 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

You would also want to adjust the brightness of your device’s screen so your eyes will have an easier time focusing.

Moreover, it is also advisable to blink periodically. Staring at computer screens can dry our eyes and cause redness and irritation.

Another tip is to consider computer glasses. Computer glasses are prescription eyewear that are specifically designed for computer work. They allow you to focus your eyes on the distance of a computer screen, which is generally farther away than reading material. Computer glasses optimize your eyesight when you're looking at digital screens and help to reduce glare.

Lastly, schedule a yearly comprehensive eye exam and be sure to tell your eye doctor about your workstation setup and the number of hours each day you spend on electronic devices.

To prevent CVS, keep in mind that it is important to have a handy eye lubricant that you find effective in relieving dry eyes. Keep a bottle of it on your desk, in your bag, or beside your bed for instant relief when you experience eye strain or dryness.
