THE GOOD SERVANT

-

GIMSON LAZO GONZALES

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,” Mark 10:45

Probably the noblest thing to do especially in these trying times, where chaos just seems to be a normal situation in our daily lives.. “to serve”.

It starts at home, how we feel serving our own family. Are we happy? or we just do it because we’re being obliged by our parents. Perhaps the better question is “What does it means to serve?” We serve because we value something like people, relationships, work or even pets!

We serve because we also wanted to be served. We serve to satisfy and later on we gain appreciation. There is no exception; everybody has the capacity to serve. Although sometimes it’s frustrating when we don’t get the service we want in return and eventually there are those who end up being bitter that they even disregard the golden rule.

How we serve others reflect our character if we have the capacity to become a good leader. Good leaders are once good servants. Tenzin Gyatso, more popularly known as the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu and Mahatma Gandhi to name a few. These men gained the respect of millions of people because they led by example. They started as a good servant and not only that, they touched lives.

By serving with compassion and empathy, we are persuading others to achieve individual growth. Compassion is our engine to serve others tirelessly. Practising compassion, focusing on the needs and concerns of others before of ourselves. Serving even without the social media. Serving with all your heart. As it is written in the book of Philippians; “for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose. Do everything without complaining or arguing”. And in Ephesians: “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”. We are programmed to do good works.. to serve. Unfortunately nowadays, only a few knows how to serve. Mostly it’s the other way around. Ironically, many want to become leaders even without having the foundation of serving.

We all wanted to be called good servants, but we must understand first the meaning of being a servant. Walking the talk or putting faith into action; no matter where or what our profession is, we should always keep our feet on the ground so we can give our best service. And in due time, we will all reap what we sow and the One who sees us in secret will reward us.
