PERFORMANCE TASK: A PREREQUISITE TASK TO K-12 LEARNERS
JAN JAN C. LANSANGAN
In the K to 12 Basic Education Program, the highest percentage in evaluating learners in different learning areas is the performance task presented by the said program. Half of their grades must be based on their performance, participation and output in the subject every quarter. This is implemented so that students really experience and perform the target competencies for every subject. There would be life-long learning if students experience the skills for the particular topic. Every subject consists of different activities based on the learning competencies in which students are asked to comply and participate. It is a need for the learners to participate and be active in performing their understanding level to the given topic so that they will be able to get high grades based on the criteria or rubrics given by their subject teachers.
Performance task will help learners experience the real life situation, boost their self-confidence and determination and become more equipped, skilled and trained as competitive learners. This can also be a guide for learners to express themselves on what they really know, what they feel and what strategies and understanding they will present and perform in the given situation or scenario presented by the teachers. Life-long learning will be evident to them because of the experiences they had been through. This could also be improved their social aspect through working collaboratively and cooperatively with their groupmates. Working together means learning and enhances socialization. Sharing ideas, thoughts and beliefs with one another help them know their own strengths and weaknesses so that they will be able to work with understanding and helping each other.
Since the goal of the program is to produce 21st century holistic learners that can be globally competitive, preparing them to be one is through providing quality education and quality learning experiences. Learning by doing is a best strategy that can be employed to the classroom-teaching setting. Students will surely learn the relevant skills and perform the competencies needed in assessing their abilities in the lesson. This will also prepare the learners to be active and engaged in different tracks that will help them choosing the best career in their future. Exposing them with different activities and performance tasks, students will discover their potentials and vocation they would prefer in the future. Letting them learn by themselves through the performance tasks presented will give them the opportunity to assess themselves at the same time and to enjoy the experiences with one another. — oOo—
