VALUES IN LEADERSHIP

-

ALMA P. CUNANAN

At times we have to be reminded on how values put great impact in leading people as a leader. During the discussion, I was able to reflect somehow on the values that I have in me. And while I’m trying to get the message of our speaker then, there is this one situation happened in our school to which I found out the real essence of values and how it might solve the whole thing and the conflict between us in a manner of not hurting one another and saying words that may make the situation to get worse that is being “humble”

Admitting one’s mistake makes easier for us to decide on what to do, it is better to hear both sides than to jump into conclusion and be one sided. I realized that keeping your feet on the ground will not ruin my position neither my personal life but rather improve how I deal with other people.

Values remind us always of what we are and who we really are as a human. I believe that these will lead us to better responsibilities. These also prompt us that we are human and that basic goodness is expected from us.

No matter how far I have gone, how richer I become, no matter what changes I have experienced in the past, still there is no important reality that can never be taken in me and that is basic goodness. It’s so essential, no matter how we run away from it, still there is something deep within us that will constantly remind us of who we are.

Why do we need to invest time in shaping our values? Would it be good help to create a good relationship among others? Becoming successful leader¬ someone who is able to build a long-lasting and high performing team. It is not about what you do, although it is essential, it is about living a life deeply held with values.

Remember there is a saying that your values are the most treasured when they are clearly understood and defined. Leaders must set good example in doing what is right and avoiding what is wrong. We have many decisions to make and responsibilities to face. Our ethics and values should be visible because we live them with our actions every single day.

Your decisions whether big or small can be made faster and easier with great confidence, honor and pride. Start on what you know is right to influence others. In that way, you can easily influence and encourage your team to do the same thing.

Being a leader comes with great responsibility. Our trust with others simply means empowering them to do better. We create people not on what they are but rather on how we see them what they can be in the future. It is also considered a fulfillment for a leader to see that there are aspiring leader in his team.

Whenever a person asks me what makes me happy and what I value the most, I always have three reasons, my family, my work, and God above all things. Lately, I realized I have enough in life and money alone is not the only thing I need in order to survive. Living in a simple life is one of the attitudes your team has to see from you. In that simple way, you are teaching them to become contented of what they have and teach them how to use them to their fullest potentials.

Leaders from all walks of life, must possess the integrity needed on their works and on their personal lives. In school, we are not watched or monitored by our superiors at all times, yet we are doing.

Last September 12, 2017 we had our PASSHT meeting and a seminar on Value based Leadership with our resource speaker sir George Jose Ma. C. Guilas. I recall him saying “The welfare of people must be of best service”. For me, that is the essence of “true Leadership”

For you to become a good leader, you must set a good example and a role model, a leader that gives his/ her best, a leader with a “heart” who is always ready to listen and all ears to people. A true leader who was born to be of services, self-less and untouched of changing times. A leader who is fair and just, fully equipped with the different values as a foundation of genuine leadership. As TIC in English department, I can truly attest that at times I have some colleagues who are having difficulty in meeting the deadline for some paper works; I need to be patient and deal with this problem in maximum tolerance, holistically approach them and live by example in the best way I can.

Another beautiful passage which strikes me most is “Glimpse of Eternity”, whenever we live our lives accordingly, when we live by the values we learned, that means… a glimpse of eternity. As long as we are alive, we are full of hope that something good will happen to us. We are always hopeful and amidst that heavy downpour of rain there will be a rainbow and a brighter tomorrow ahead. We must not lose our faith in ourselves that everything is happening for a reason and that God is always there for us.

I do believe that what we are doing now has something to do in the future ahead. Our good deeds, partaking ourselves to others, sharing the love we possesses to the suffering fellowmen, values which we observe, nurturing ourselves with what they are meant for, trying to live in righteousness, and therefore ,we see a glimpse of eternity. We are accountable to God for whatever we’ve done in this lifetime. Designated as TIC, I know I am just starting to learn a lot in this field, stepping another live, but I must recreate/ gear myself to new learning, although I have the same workload as the Head teachers do, but I know this is just a preparation of what will happen in the near future and the nature of work. I’m dealing with now, will be the very work I’ll be facing in the future. When I had the chance to be promoted from Teacher III to Master teacher, I was hopeful that everything I prepared was in the right and perfect time. I accomplished every single requirement for the position. When they assessed my papers in the Regional office, unluckily, denied because of some “unit lapses”. I never thought that will happen because I comply with the requirements mentioned.

When I reflected on the situation, I realized that, if it’s meant for me by all means it will come. So, I consoled myself and endure but still enthusiastic that one of these days, the “glimpse of eternity”in teaching… will be in realty.
