ACWD exec supports water shed protection
ACWD General Manager Reynaldo Liwanag said that a preserved environment is important for sustainable water supply.
The city government, through its environment office, recently held a water management meeting to address the month-long water shortage in the city’s two upland villages of Sapang Bato and Margot.
Environmentalists, water providers in the city, and other concerned groups, attended the said meeting, according to the ACWD official.
Liwanag said that one of the concerns raised during the meeting was the protection of the Sapang Bato Watershed Area.
The use of surface or bulk water to address the water crisis was also raised during the meeting, according to Liwanag.
He said that the 400-hectare Sapang Bato water shed area should be protected.
“We are willing to cooperate and support them (environmental groups and government) because we are affected. Run-off water will cause flooding if there are no trees in the upland areas. We may also conduct treeplanting and provide seedlings as part of our corporate social responsibility,” Liwanag said.
The ACWD executive also stressed the need to conserve water. “We are distributing reading materials to educate our concessionaires about water conservation.”
The ACWD official reiterated that the supply of water in the two villages will be restored within three months.
Liwanag disclosed that ACWD operates and maintains 34 water pumping stations all over the city.
