TECHNICAL-VOCATIONAL-LIVELIHOOD TRACK

- JHONETTE CALIDA SERRANO

It is very important for someone to earn a college diploma, especially during these days wherein there is strict competition in the workplace. Having graduated with a college degree will definitely boost your standing in landing a job.

However, if we take a look at what is really happening nowadays, most Filipinos are not able to finish college. That was why the government implemented the K to 12 in our education system. Now, we should no longer worry about senior high school graduates who will not pursue collegiate studies because several public and private agencies and companies will be able to hire them as professionals.

In reality, not everything that we learn in school will be used when we enter the real world of work and employment. I still remember my college professor telling us that only 3 percent or so of what we have learned in college will be put and used in real life situations. Life from outside the four corners of the classroom is beyond what we thought of back then.

The day will come when the theory or concept that you very much memorized in school will soon be forgotten. Meanwhile, the “skills” that we honed in school will be much more beneficial for us if we continue to develop it through our career and lifetime, because as time passes by, we become more and more of an expert in our respective fields.

Under the K to 12 program, one of the “tracks” that a student can choose is the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood Track, which has four different strands: Agri-Fishery Arts Strand, Home Economics Strand, Industrial Arts Strand, and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Strand.

This track is very useful for Filipino students especially those who want to focus on livelihood and agriculture. This track will not only prepare senior high school students for collegiate studies but will also make them able to work already, if they choose to, after they graduate from high school.

And since this track is more focused in honing the skills of the students, they can, in turn, be experts in such fields. These skills are what they need to excel in their careers, businesses and future ventures.
