EDUKASYON SA PAGPAPAKATAO AND THE YOUTH TODAY

- ELIZA P. QUINIT

What is a strong nation made of apart from a sound economy and law-abiding citizens? A strong nation is built on the strong moral fiber of its citizenry, and this all starts in the education of our youth.

The subject Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao is one of the foundations for this. EPP is a subject not to be taken for granted not only because it is part of the curriculum, but especially because it builds the character of our students inasmuch as strengthens their values and virtues.

Character, as we all know, is what a person is — inside or outside. It is what works for us, when everything else has failed.

This subject is taught is both elementary and secondary schools, and has the same weight as that of the core subjects like English, Science or Math.

With the implementation of the K to 12 Curriculum, EPP has been revamped and now covers subject areas touching on ethics and morality.

What does it equip our students? It instills the necessary prudence and moral responsibility which are necessary to guide the youth in making life decisions. It showcases the practicality of life and deals with attitude, good morals and right conduct, right values and virtues to live by.

And more importantly, it develops and instills the core values of Maka- Diyos, Maka-Tao, Maka-Kalikasan and Maka-Bansa in the hearts and minds of every student.

The Department of Education recognizes the need to produce morally upright students. A nation, after all, should be made up of citizens who are morally grounded and who have a strong foundation on what is right and wrong.

With this subject is the vision that students are properly taught at school, with proper reinforcements at home. This is a big vision indeed, but is achievable with the help of the school and stakeholders.

There is nothing more important than raising responsible citizens whose morals and ideals could not be compromised.
