BALANGA CITY, Bataan — Governor Albert Raymond Garcia referred to Bataeño youth as the “new Balagtas” of today’s generation who don’t use violence to achieve change or success.

This was his message during the 230th birth anniversary of Francisco “Balagtas”Baltazar held Monday at the Hardin ni Balagtas in Orion town.

The celebration was spearheaded by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino in partnership with the Provincial Government of Bataan.

Garcia lauded Balagtas known as the Prince of Tagalog Poets for his contribution to Philippine literature especially his masterpiece Florante at Laur a.

“Balagtas and his works should serve as a challenge and an inspiration to each of us especially to the youth facing challenges in life who shouldn’t be discouraged in pursuing their dreams for their family and the country,” Garcia added.

According to Garcia, Balagtas once served the town as a government official before marrying Juana Tiambeng. Balagtas was born in Bulacan but resided in Orion, Bataan.

Aside from Garcia, Second District Representative Jose Enrique Garcia III and National Commission for Culture and the Arts Chairperson Virgilio Almario attended the wreath laying rites at the monument of Balagtas.

The ceremony is in line with Proclamation No. 964 series of 1997 which declares April 2 every year as Balagtas Day.— Mar Jay S. Delas Alas/ PIA-3
