UA facilitates seminar for YAKAP scholar parents
The
University of the Assumption (UA) recently facilitated a seminar on parenting, held recently at the university. The attendees were parents of the institution’s YAKAP scholars.
YAKAP scholars are children of indigent families from the communities near the University of the Assumption. =They attend pre-school class for free for one year and the basic education program as scholars.
Amir Canlas (UAGS Batch 1998, UAJHS Batch 2002 and BS Psychology Batch 2006) facilitated the seminar. He guided the parents in identifying their roles and responsibilities as responsible parents.
The parents also attend retreats and weekly Bible-sharing sessions organized by the Community Extension Office (CEO).
In partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment, several of these families were given loan to start their business.
Currently, the program has 2 scholars in the UA Junior High School and 14 in the UA Grade School.
One of the first beneficiaries of the program is Jade Montoya who will be in Grade 10 next year. Jade is a consistent honor student in the UA Junior High School. He finished Grade 9 with High Honors.
Jace Ivo Ifurung and Khalil Dein Calma, Grade 3 and 2, also ranked With High Honors.
Eight of those in different levels in grade school also made it to the With Honors list.
Yakap, which means “to embrace”, is a charitable service of UA which aims to provide formal early education to ‘poorest of the poor’ children whose families are incapable of sending them to school.
The fund-raising project called “Adopt-AYakap-Scholar” is supported by various donors who help pay for the school fees of the students for one academic year.
