CLIMATE CHANGE: A GLOBAL CONCERN in EDUCATION

- CHERRY LOURDES G. DE LEON

According to National Geographic the temperature of the earth is rising at nearly twice the rate it was 50 years ago. Scientists have concluded that this rapid change and pattern of warming causes global warming.

It is so alarming at this period that most of the people on earth neglects the sole responsibility to stop or rather lessen this problem. God created man as caretaker of the environment, but what is happening nowadays? Man has become the destroyer and predator of its own environment.

Climate change is a global issue that concerns every human on earth. At the onset of industrial revolution, machines and other scientific tools and gadgets pave its way to the new generation. But such revolution has its pros and cons, its impact and danger can lead to global issues like climate change. The inventions of cooling machines and equipments that produces CFC’s can elevate global warming in the environment. Why in the Philippines CFC’s are still in the market? These product are already banned in other countries for they contribute greater danger in the environment. Locally in the province they are still in scarcity, the city had already banned plastics everywhere. I hope that other places would join hands to avoid and eliminate the used of these toxins in our environment.

As an educator, it is really a great need to teach students care for the environment for it is the only home we have. Integrating it in science lesson beginning in the their very first foundation, to junior up to senior high can broaden children’s understanding of how important it is to save mother earth from climate change and it should start within ourselves. Junior HS has several programs in the YES-O club concerning care of the environment, like symposia, clean up drive, waste segregation, recycling, avoiding plastic, styrofoam and other forms of detrimental materials that are toxic in the environment. This simple leap can inculcate in the mind of our learners the word “Responsible Students”. In their own simple ways can help lessen the effects of climate change.

As a young mind, I think they should act now. If not today, when? Think about it! Let’s prevent climate change! Act now…
