Changing Face of Education

- ANNABELLE P. DAVID ***** Teacher III at Sindalan Elementary School

People might say that the only permanent thing in this world is change. From time to time, our world undergoes series of changes. Changes in people happen too. There are changes in their lifestyles, the way they dress, speak and even in some practices and needs. I think we cannot stop it from happening. We just have to live with it.

We now live in a century where technology is over the globe. It only takes a tip of a finger to know anything. Internet is frequently opened than books. Consequently, the way we educate future generations also varies.

Education then was simpler. Teachers teach children with books on their hands, properly seated and no noise heard in the classroom. Children are allowed to talk only when they raise their hands and the teacher permits them to do so. Before the teacher starts the day, she/he sees to it the children cut their nails, neatly groomed and all has their eyes and ears on her/him. Children then are also given home works to enhance their knowledge and skills even they’re at home.

They are also asked to memorize concepts and read some lessons in advance. To do these things, children have to go to the library. Technology changed this practice. Children now just have to surf the internet to do their assignments. With one click, everything they need is there.

As well as the teachers’ methods of teaching have to be parallel to the present advancement. They now use computers in teaching. Reading books comes along with researching through internet.

They even watch online videos and then share those to the children for deeper understanding rather than merely looking at still pictures.

Being outspoken in the classroom is no big deal provided the children practices freedom with learning. Children are learning by doing things that requires physical movements.

Teachers allow children to explore the environment outside the four corners of the classroom for wide range conceptualization. This is an advantage isn’t it?

Teachers are not teachers when they do not inculcate values in their children. Once, teachers are respected even they impose punishment for the wrong things their children committed.

They serve as the second parents children committed. They serve as the second parents anyway.

Children are the ones to be asked by their parents when their grades are low. Parents thank teachers for imposing discipline to their child.

They also apologize for the troubles their child does in school. Today, it’s the other way around. I will leave to you to imagine.
