TEACHERS AS MENTORS OF EVERY PROFESSION

- MODESTA B. DE GUZMAN

Teaching, having been perceived as a very significant vocation for it educates all other professions, teachers play an important role in effecting change in the society not only in terms of literacy and numeracy, but also, in terms of values and character formation. Hence, every educator must not only be a facilitator of instruction. He should also be a facilitator of transformation in terms of attitude and behavior.

He should walk the talk, model what he preachers. This could be done by behaving modestly and discreetly at all times. Although this may pose a big challenge to every mentor because he is only a human being that commits mistakes at times, but while it is very challenging, the harvest is sweet and significant since as a mentor, he is able to develop the totality of the learner.

Nowadays, the youth are classified as millennials with unique learning needs and characteristics. It is a challenge how a teacher could educate each learner according to his needs. However, let one must not be disheartened with such changes. Teachers must not be disheartened however the classroom situation has changed because they are known to be the significant people whose effects to others may extend infinitely. Their influence as mentors and educators among their learners, knows no bounds. Teachers are soldiers who wage war against illiteracy and ignorance. They are sentinels who guide the youth toward a better future. Thus, as the representative of the Greatest Mentor/Rabbi, teachers must continue to fulfill their functions as the molders of the youth.
