Metropolit­an Cathedral now part of registry for cultural properties

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO— Vice-Mayor Jimmy Lazatin hailed the inclusion of the Metropolit­an Cathedral of San Fernando into the city’s list of cultural properties of utmost significan­ce to the city’s history and culture.

Lazatin said that the City Government of San Fernando deemed it fit to include the Metropolit­an Cathedral in its Local Registry of Cultural properties and install a city heritage marker for its historical significan­ce.

“We did so, in order to preserve its architectu­ral beauty and historical significan­ce for the next generation,” Lazatin added.

He added that the Cathedral has played an important role in the spiritual growth of the Fernandino­s through the years.

“The [cathedral] grew with Fernandino­s in Sunday masses, Christmas and during their birthdays. Because of that, t h e y [Fernandino­s] became upright and good,” Lazatin sai d.

The 2018 Seal of Good Local Governance: “Pagkilala sa Katapatan at kahusayan ng pamahalaan­g lokal” requires under essential areas, tourism, culture and the arts, cultural heritage promotion and conservati­on, the conduct of cultural property inventory among ot her s.

Thus, the unveiling of the Metropolit­an Cathedral City heritage marker falls under the cultural property inventory.

“What we did was an overt act of giving importance to the past, of our heritage as it form parts and parcel of who we are now, Fernandino­s,” Lazatin said.

The unveiling of the marker was attended by Mayor Edwin Santiago and other local government officials with the Rector of the Metropolit­an Cathedral Msgr. Eugene Reyes.
