HAU-SED promotes ‘whole school approach to peace education’

-

Taking its peace education advocacy to the next level, the Holy Angel University School of Education (HAU-SED) has partnered with Mabalacat Community High School (MCHS) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation-Asia-Pacific Network for International Education and Values Education (UNESCO-APNIEVE) in promoting the whole school-approach in integrating peace education.

This was made possible through the capacity building of all MCHS teachers via a three-day seminar-workshop on peace education and conflict resolution held at the PGN Case Room 411.

The MCHS teachers were given training on the essentials on peace educators’ and on the whole schoolapproach to integrating peace education through lectures and workshops provided by Prof. Rene Romero, UNESCO-APNIEVE Regional Coordinator for Region 3 and Dr. Jasmin Nario-Galace, Executive Director of Miriam College Center for Peace Education.

Other important topics were tackled by its six-member organizing committee: Holistic Understanding of Peace and Violence by Arlan dela Cruz, Challenging Prejudice by Eden Dizon, Nonviolent Conflict Resolution by Arlyn Monis and Louella Mamuyac and Teaching-Learning Strategies in Peace Education by Dr. Carolina Sarmiento and Helen Mae Moreno.

For years, HAU-SED has partnered with selected public and private high schools in Angeles City and San Fernando, Pampanga for its peer mediation/conflict resolution training for student leaders and international peace day celebrations.

This activity is the first time that HAUSED is working collaboratively with a high school community involving all its stakeholders: the students, the faculty, and the school administrators towards a whole school-approach in integrating peace education. Before all peacebuilding-initiatives are implemented this coming school year at MCHS, a capacity building seminar for teachers on peace education is considered.

This tripartite undertaking was the product of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed among HAU-SED (represented by Dean Dr. Benita M. Bonus), UNESCO-APNIEVE (represented by its President, Dr. Maria Lourdes Quisumbing-Baybay), and MCHS (represented by its School Principal Manolito de Leon) last April 20 during the 17th National Convention of the UNESCOAPNIEVE held at HAU.
