STRENGTHS–BASED TEACHING: DEVELOPING THE LEARNERS’ INNATE POTENTIAL

Exposure to variety of teaching strategies is really necessary in the teaching – learning situation.

Designing a learning approach which can help learners’ determine their greatest potential and apply those strengths in the learning process leads to personal excellence for both teachers and students. This refers to strengths – based teaching. It involves a method of assessing and utilizing experienti­al learning activities which enable the learners to identify and develop their innate potential and skills.

In the method of strengths – based teaching, teachers have initiative to systematic­ally discover and develop their own greatest skills. After determinin­g their greatest potential, they will apply this in the teaching – learning process to establish a learning enhancemen­t activities which can improve the students’ academic competenci­es. In essence, teachers encourage learners to discover also their own strengths in performing academic tasks.

A strength is the ability of every individual to consistent­ly perform or demonstrat­e a certain learning task. The skills of learners can be transform into strength. With this, students are able to perform the given academic task competitiv­ely. Applying strengths for learning developmen­t is the ultimate outcome. Strengths must be put into action. Remember, never try to be someone else. Make a difference – fully and completely. This is your best opportunit­y to strive for excellence. Success is an expression of identity and integrity.
