DISCIPLINE IN LEARNING DOES MATTER

- EDRALIN R. BACANI

In every teaching-learning situation, the teacher brings with him a game plan. A plan packed with teaching principles and strategies that supports the proper execution of the learning competencies of every lesson taught. These learning competencies in spiral approach are based in the curriculum offered by the Philippine Educational System to prepare the learners to be competitive and intellectually independent in some manner. This will not be achieved unless the teacher has been able to create a successful learning environment.

This is the crucial goal and role of the teacher. Not only to discuss the lesson efficiently but to ensure that the learners put into practice each and every competency as a result of a successful classroom interaction.

As the teacher is in the process of creating such kind of environment, classroom management is being applied and discipline is strictly observed. The teacher should teach without interruptions, takes control of the entire situation in a firm but positive manner. Therefore, the teacher should establish some rules and regulations to follow at all times to avoid disruptive behavior or inappropriate actions from the learners during the learning process that might compromise the delivery of the instruction. The teacher should engage all of his learners and call the attention of those who misbehave so as to prevent other learners to be affected in doing an educational activity. The teacher should also set some clear standards in teaching so that transfer of learning will be maximized while competencies are to be realized.

Education should be given in a manner wherein learners are prepared to instill in their minds the necessary information that they must be acquired and be able to utilize these in their future challenges in life. In the process of acquiring education , discipline among those who are involved must be observed and inculcated in the behavior of each and always be reminded of the proper code of behaving well so that learning will be at the extent of its best application in real life. A person will not be well-educated if without discipline. If a person is not behaving well, then learning will not be achieved as it may seem.

Learning is a responsibility. It should not be compromised. It should be imparted accurately and precisely. If discipline is directly involved in learning, then the environment where it is taking place will be successful because discipline in learning does really matter.
