FAITH AND WISDOM
CRISTINA L. CORDOVA
Faith and wisdom go hand in hand when it comes to leadership. Faith alone is not enough because it can stain the judgment of a person. The same goes with wisdom because this alone will not motivate a person to act. In leadership, clarifying the organization’s purpose is a difficult task, because even though your subordinates work under one company, they all have different purposes in doing so. Some employees just work for the sake of the salary. Some will not even be serious on their job. And it is up to the leader to give the purpose of the organization to motivate the employees to work for its betterment.
Aside from the purpose, a company has also values. In the Department of Education we got what we call the Code of ethics. A school head, as a leader, should refresh the Code to new teachers as for them to have a mindset of their expectations.
Taking risk is also an important quality of a leader. It only shows that a leader is fearless on trying something new which can benefit a whole organization. Without taking risks, an organization has no way of growing.
People who never experienced being a leader often do not understand the struggles of being one. They do not try imagining themselves in the shoes of the leaders. And that’s when one conflict arises. Because both the leader and his members have misunderstanding.
One important point which got my attention in the text is the statement “the right frame of mind is to figure out how the losses can be changed into profits.” Because people experience losses. Organizations experience losses. And it is up to the leader to have the right frame of mind to motivate his members to not lose heart when failure happens.
Another point is this: “Do not make a decision when you are upset because you do not see things the way they really are.” In an organization, there are many things that can bring frustration to a leader. Be it a deadline that was not met, a coworker with bad attitude, or a boss who demands too much, anything can make a leader upset, and it is easier to just attack a person when you are upset instead of attacking the issue. And having a right mindset can straighten things up.
