PROFICIENCY IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE : A MUST
ANAROSE B. CABRERA
Teaching students to speak, read and write English has always been challenging. But the challenges are worthwhile when it is clear that students are learning and succeeding. Teachers play a critical role in supporting language development. As stated in the Language Curriculum, it is the basis of all communication and the primary instrument of thought. In similar way it is governed by rules and systems (language conventions) which are used to explore and communicate meaning.
Teaching must go beyond teaching our students the concepts of reading ,writing and listening. Proficiency in language facility should also be stressed out through the teaching of oral communications with correct grammar usage. This is because, students need to learn and use aspects of language associated with the academic discourse in various school subjects. In like manner, students need to become more aware of how language functions in various modes of communication across the curriculum.
It is for this reason that teachers must exert effort in selecting the materials that will help students’ to expand language abilities. Instructional activities should also be prepared that will give students opportunities to use the new forms and modes of expressions to which they are being exposed.
