MODERN DAY HEROES

-

ELAINE N. BANSIL

“Heroes, they say are like saviors. Other people think they are “knight and shining armour”, who protect and always look after the welfare of other people.

In modern days like these can we say that acts of heroism still exist? If yes, then, who can we consider as our modern day heroes?

Heroes like Dr. Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Emilio Aguinaldo and others consecrated their life for our country’s freedom. Today, since we have our democracy already we no longer need to die just to become heroes. Acts of heroism can be shown in big and even small ways.

Many Filipinos are in fact showing this trait and need to be recognized like the “soldiers and policemen who are frontliners when it comes to national security and peace of order. They can be called heroes for they risk their lives to protect people. The “Firefighters” who endanger their lives just to save people and properties can be called “heroes”. Teachers now a days can also be considered heroes because they play a vital role in the education of the youth and are pillars of nation building. “Rescuers” who voluntarily help individuals in times of calamities and disasters can also be tagged as heroes. Heroes that think of others more and less of themselves.

The Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW’s) in different parts of the world sacrificed a lot for their families and help in the economy of our country through their remittances are also timeless heroes. These are only some of the heroes of our times. There are still a lot around who chose not let the public know about their acts.

Unsung heroes who never fail to do good and wait nothing in return. Indeed, they are heroes in the real sense of the word. Heroes that we can count on and be proud of.

With these, a person doesn’t need to die in the battlefield to become a hero. All it takes to be one is to have a deep love and concern for other people. Show and manifest this love through action and good deeds. Then, you and I can be called modern day heroes who continue to uphold the legacy of our national patriots.
