THE PARENT’S ROLE IN THE IMPROVEMENT OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS

-

KAREN GLAYNES O. LACSINA

ARE parents responsible in improving the public school in their respective areas? Well, the answer is definitely YES, they are! Most teachers recognize that parental involvement in the school activities is absolutely important and this is what public schools really are trying to work out. Others perceive themselves as professionals who do not accept parental intrusion. Parents should never consent to this idea for you are ultimately responsible for the education of your children. Never surrender that parental authority over your kids.

You consider that educators are your employees, paid their monthly salaries and other incentives out from your taxes, and the teachers are accountable to the school board members or what we locally called the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) whom parents elect. The best performing schools are those with the most parental participation, cooperation and support.

With this concern, parents should always visit your child’s school to know the educational standing of your child, updates of the school policies such as classroom structure, respect and discipline and you may clarify some issues and questions of interest to you and your child.

If you find the school teachers and administrators, as well as the school board officials are really doing their best in educating your children, you have to express your appreciation and commendation to them. Parents should express their support and sincere commitment in carrying out their school mission.

Parents join the Parents-Teachers Association and get involve. Meet with parents group. Participate and involve yourself in any school activities. Always remember, schools function best when the long-established principle and spirit of BAYANIHAN by parents prevails.
