Season’s r ai ns

-

The rainy season has started recently. Just like the other years, we are faced with perennial problems like flooding, clogging of waterways, piles of trash and of course, traffic jams.

These problems occur even at the slightest drizzle or a heavy downpour. But these are not new to us and in fact they happen year after year. Unfortunately, the government has not yet found solutions to problems we are familiar with.

During rains, there are hundreds of low-lying areas in the country which are flooded. Water seeks its own level, that’s the law of nature that we cannot go against with. However, we can have these low-lying areas which can be applied solutions with to address their being inundated. They can either be poured with tons of earthfilling materials or be constructed with canals to drain flood away. Speaking of flood, one of the reasons why areas get flooded aside from the fact that its soil has been saturated with water is the clogging of waterways. Plastic, plastic, plastic everywhere.

A few years back, plastic bags were the most popular materials clogging esteros and other waterways. They were replaced by shampoo sachets since shampoos are very popular to Filipinos, male or female alike.

Survey says, the popular plastic form of trash today are the three-in-one coffee sachets. These are popular to Filipinos to satisfy their cravings for a hot drink. However, they are popular too in garbage sites and streets too after the flood subsided.

When waterways and flood channels get clogged with flood, they swell. Thus throwing the excess water on the streets and in homes because these such waterways cannot anymore contain the volume of water.

During floods, we expect vehicles, thousands and thousands of them look for alternate routes to avoid being submerged. Of course, this matter highly aggravates traffic problem on streets and highways. There are traffic jams anyway even during summer.

With all of these popular predicaments in the country we experience regularly, its high time that authorities should find solutions. We experience them often, thus we are familiar with them.
