3 R’S IN LEADERSHIP

-

ALBERT V. DATU

Being a successful leader is not in the terms of what you can get in authority, social status, and wealth. Because successful leaders come from all walks of life, whether from poverty or privilege, they are driven not just to attain power, but to motivate and influence others to become a leader as well. Great leaders who inspire and influence others have many things in common. Here are the three R’s that I think would be of great help in developing yourself as a leader and your successor.

Relationship

It is very important to be aware about the importance of building relationship with the people. Just like playing a basketball. You need to block your opponent to make a way for your teammate to get the ball pass through the ring. And there is a need for you to protect your teammate in a possible injury. It is not only applied in a game. It is also a need to a mentor and a mentee. Getting to know each other is a better way of discovering each other’s strength and weaknesses. Knowing both strength and weakness you will be able to learn more to make it as your weapon to grow as a team. Taking tour with the best companion you have, surely you’ll enjoy the journey. The benefit of making good working relationship, team workers will be happier and enjoy working with the team and would create great productivity. You can build good relationship in your workplace by appreciating the works of your team members by giving rewards and recognition.

Respect

People tend to “follow the leader” and they emulate the behavior of the dependable, hard working and with high sense of good values then that would inspire them to commit their loyalty and respect to you. When the leader treats their follower with courtesy and respect that would create team workers who value courtesy and respect. Consider also a two way communication by making dialogue with your people by listening to their suggestions and comments and making them engage and feel that they belong in the team. Remember the saying “there is no I in the team”.

Responsibility

As I quote the famous line of spiderman “great power comes great responsibility”, leadership is not about power it more on responsibility. You as a leader you are responsible in leading your team to the right direction being able to direct your members in doing the great thing. Responsible leader strives to make his team achieve a significant result by inspiring his members with great ideas through creative thinking. With this you are able to discover the potential leader in the group and train him to be the next leader because you need accept the fact that you will not be there forever. And the most important aspect of being a leader is being responsible in accepting and correcting failures this is the opportune time to uplift the morale of your team when issues and struggles come.

Put it all together relationship, respect and responsibility shows a picture of the truly inspiring leader: someone who engage people and commit them to being a part of your plan and vision of the organization. An authentic leader who draws out their people to become the best, and can be possible future leaders.
