MATH IS FOR EVERYONE

- CARLA E. DABU

Are you one of the students who feel anxious when they hear about numbers and symbols? Do you worry about being called by your teacher to solve the given problem on the board? Still hiding when the class is scheduled for a recitation of the equations? Do you wonder (and/ or question) why we even need to study Mathematics in school? Are you one of us?

Mathematics is found everywhere: from the moment you wake up as the alarm sets off in the morning to the computation of the number of hours you work in the office; from the measurement of the ingredients you put in your cooking to the amount of nutrients there actually is in your food; from the time you open your eyes at birth until you close them - everything in between is mathematical. Admit it or not, we are bound to learn the subject in all the ways we can. We are meant to learn, unlearn, and relearn the formulas, the equations, the signs and symbols, and everything else that involves time, space, distance, numbers, etcetera. We should embrace the fact that Mathematics is an important subject and it should be given all the focus it deserves when we go to class for learning. No matter how hard we deny it, we need the Mathematics in our lives.

Whenever we feel the anxiety running through our veins as the teacher approaches the class during Math sessions, we should remind ourselves that life would have definitely been miserable had our forefathers not learned to compute the number of hours there are in a day or the number of days there are in a year and so on and so forth. Whenever we question its necessity, may we be reminded how much of a burden it would have been if we don’t know of time, money, and our numbers in general. Though it can sometimes be a scary subject, Mathematics can be amazing too - and it is for you, me, and them. It is for everyone.
