CRITICAL CONTENT IN MATH

-

JENNIFER R. TULLAO

With the full implementation of the K to 12 Basic Education Program, the Department of Education (DepEd), through the Bureau of Curriculum Development (BCD) and in coordination with the Regional Offices (ROs), conducted the K to 10 Training of Teachers (TOT) on Critical Content, including Mathematics.

The training is designed to help teachers in resolving the issues in teaching critical topics in mathematics by introducing various teaching methodologies and techniques based on the mathematics curriculum specialist’perspective.

The training was also aimed at enhancing the teaching competence of the teacher through proper understanding of the mathematics curriculum standards implementation.

What is critical content? Students need to know how to accept ownership of their own learning. A teacher’s job becomes much easier when students are able to take control of their progress.

Students, in succeeding academically, need to determine which content is critical, why it’s important, how it connects to their existing knowledge, and when it will inform their future learning.

Today’s educators, on the other hand, need sound strategies to help them teach this increasingly important skill.

During the seminar, there was an orientation of the Regional Management Teams, objectives of which were to familiarize them on the training design; and to finalize the Regional Training Implementation Plan.

The Orientation of National Trainers, meanwhile, was aimed at familiarizing the national trainers on the training design; and to finalize the training design and training materials.

The National Training of Teachers was conducted to provide participants with concrete understanding of critical content across selected subject areas, while the Training of Teachers on Critical Content by Learning Area was aimed to provide teachers with concrete understanding of critical content in the curriculum, and opportunities to demonstrate understanding of critical content.
