TEACHING… A CALLING… A MISSION…

-

ELSIE P. RIVERA

Most of us were brought up in a family where education was introduced as a treasure that no one can ever take away from you. It is the most valuable possession that a person has. With this perception about education, it gives me the determination to study hard and to reach my dream as well, that it is to be a teacher.

Teaching in private schools gives me a sense of fulfillment because of the compliments and the lessons in life for my students that they were able to learn on how to be the best person they are right now.

Everything has changed when I started to teach in public schools. It seems that the situation is far more different from private schools. Struggles have been my companion since then. There are times that I want to give up my teaching career but there is this calling inside of me, telling me that I am needed by these children.

Everyday experiences with my pupils are challenges. Challenges to do better and find ways to make this children learn. It gives me the hunger to learn more, to grow professionally. Teaching in public school made me realize that it’s not just okay to give your heart in teaching, but what is really important is you teach with a heart. Teaching in public school is a commitment for teachers to touch the lives of your learners and make them believe that they can change their lives to be a better person in our society.
