Yaaass! Here’s a new batch of millennial terms

-

One awesome (and probably scary) thing about the internet is how swiftly it pushes the boundaries of language. It’s hard to go through a week without a new Twitter-born word or phrase.

Regardless of your generation, new slang is tricky. But, need not be salty… I’ve got your back with a new set of millennial words you need to familiarize yourself with if you want to understand what’s on your ‘feed.’Alright? Lit! Here we go.

1. Salty- This is definitely more than just having too much salt. Now, folks can be salty, too. It means to be bitter, upset or angry about something that happened.

Use: She was salty because she didn’t get that promotion she was aggressively working on.

2. Woke- refers to someone who is said to be socially and politically conscious. The term gained popularity during the # BlackLivesMatter movement which initially surfaced in 2013 followingthe death of Trayvon Martin. #StayWoke was a returning trending hasht ag.

Use: Pat is too woke. Did you hear his breakdown on the controversial film, Jacqueline Comes Home?

3. Fam- Short for family, but is now normally used when addressing someone who is close to you like “dude” and “br o.”

Use: Yo fam, can you give me a ride home?

4. Low-key- Means something that one does secretly or half-heartedly and doesn’t want to shout it to the rest of the world. More so, it can also mean hushed and calm – like a low-key party.

Use: That man means well for our country. But I low-key don’t trust him.

5. YAAAS!- Used to express excitement, a bland, unassuming word like “yes” is now all spiced and is now one of the most interesting words of our time,

Use: YAAAS! It’s weekend!

6. GOAT – The greatest of all time. (With matching goat emoji)

Use: Lebron James is an unbelievable athlete but Michael Jordan is still the GOAT.

7. Throw shade to talk trash about or to dish someone. Use: Never get on her wrong side because she’s the queen of throwing shade on social media.

8. Receipts- More than just a proof of purchase, these are evidence to expose a double standard behaviour. Receipts normally come in the form of pictures, videos, screenshots, and voice notes. Like if your partner is cheating and you’ve got pics and screenshots to finally bust him/ her, lo – you’re sitting on some serious receipts!

Use: I told you, you can’t trust this guy. Wait, let me pull up some receipts to show that he’s not who he shows he is. 9. L- typed in caps, stands for loss. Opposite of W (win) Use: Before fighting Lucas Matthysse. Manny Pacquiao has been taking L after L these past few years.
