GETTING TO KNOW ABOUT TEEN DEPRESSION

- RUBIROSA ANTONIO

Recent reports have shown that teen depression has become widespread illness among teenagers. There are over a million teenagers across the globe who suffer from depression. Unfortunately many of these teenagers who suffered from it turned to take away their own lives or worst committed suicides.

This alarming issue on teen depression seemingly unnoticed and prioritized. Many of the teenagers who suffered from such illness were left untreated. They never got the chance to be treated because of prejudice about mental illness, ignorance and emotional problem which in turn brought havoc to teenagers’ lives.

As a teacher, I really want to extend my helping hand to these teenagers for some reasons that I had witnessed a number of teens lives which get wasted because of depression. I just hope that through this article that I had written could reach the eyes of concern individuals particularly parents who have teenage children so that they could be of help to identify early signs of depression. Likewise, they could assist their children to cope with it. They should be aware of the early signs like troubling change in the eating habit, sleep patterns, reckless behavior and extreme sensitivity.

Although I have limited access and responsibility in handling serious cases of depressions, I should at least get acquainted with its causes and symptoms so that I could be an instrument and be of help to easily identify my students who will be suffering from such illness.
