LEADERSHIP AND HOW IT FUNCTIONS

- Cristina D. Dimarucut

A good leader is one who knows the way, shows the way and goes the way.” The major role of a leader is to be an steward of values, cultures and traditions because leadership is action not a position.

You can develop by catching them doing something right.

An effective leader will make it a priority to help his constituents/people produce good and better results. There are two ways to do it. First, make sure people know what their goals are. Secondly, as a leader - - do everything possible to support, encourage, and train them to accomplish their goals. It is then, that people who produce god result feel good about themselves.

A leader should praise progress too. When a good performance is done, positive feedbacks respond positively. This is an effective strategy for improving performance and it instills satisfaction to your people. If mistakes occur, as a leader, go and redirect the error and give the best advice to avoid making the same mistakes again.

As a leader, you should not only command, but you must step back and look at the perspective… the big picture because being a leader, you INNOVATE, you DEVELOP, you TRUST your people do the right thing. Keep things in perspective.

In managing or leading people, it is easier to loosen up than tighten up. It is always better to over supervise than under supervise in the beginning.

Because if you find people find people better than you thought to loosen up – then they will all respond positively.

It’s very easy to star tough and nice than to be nice in the beginning and then get though later. Anything shouldn’t be done perfect from the star. Do not expect perfection. Self-criticism is acceptable as long as it is not destructive.

The main jobs of a leader accept responsibility for that failure. If his people win, the leader wins too.

Responsible leader is responsive to the needs of his people. By being responsive to your people’s need, you set your people free to be responsible for their job.

It is more important that you are a respected leader than a popular leader. Are you willing to push your people beyond their comfort zone just to achieve excellence? Other might not like the idea or what you ask of them and definitely they will remember you as a leader they respected.

Remember, humble yourself with humility. Think more about your people and they think more of themselves. Leaders need to come behind and let others be in he spotlight instead. After all, it never hurts to toot your own horn once in a while. A little self-praise won’t hurt.

Always demonstrate what a good job look like. Leadership is not something you do to people. It is something you DO WITH PEOPLE.

Whenever you share you’re leadership strategy with your people, they not only understand what you have in mind but can give or contribute helpful feedback as well.

True leaders want feedback because they are anxious to know if he/she is an effective leader. After all, “best leaders lead by example.”

GOOD and SMART LEADERSHIP aims for EXCELLENCE, maintains INTERGRITY, always find COURAGE to CHANGE and most importantly HELP others reach their potential and be successful and an achiever a well.

Finally, they also have an impact to the lives of others by becoming a person of influence and a person of inspiration too.
