PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS IN TEACHING AND LEARNING OF ENGLISH

- ELISA T. PINEDA

Students, unless fluent, cannot discriminate between correct and wrong English. So what happens is, a teacher’s spoken and written English will be the spoken and written English of his students – which is why it is important for a teacher to be fluent in the language.

Even the best curriculum will come to naught if the teacher is not capable of using good English.

Studies have also shown that adding to the problem of teaching English is the students’ poor background of knowledge in English. They have limited vocabulary because English is not spoken outside the classroom.

To improve the spoken and written English of students, continued study is necessary for the advancement of teachers’ professional standing and efficiency. They should regularly attend of seminars and in-service training. They should also read professional books and magazines to acquire insights and enrich their professional competence.

It would also help if they are willing to prepare a wealth of instructional materials, knowledge of the broad characteristics of the pupils’ language and of the English structure. They should always speak English with their pupils anywhere at any time.

During meeting and conferences, teachers should be encouraged to converse in English. Programs and other social gatherings in schools should also be emceed in English.
