BRING GOOD VALUES BACK

- AILEEN S. CANILAO

One sad fact is that nowadays, personal interaction among people has lessened, because of the rapid development of communication technology.

We should be happy that there are numerous gadgets we use for communication, and for accessing social networking sites. But all of these mean less personal communication and interaction among people which affect personal relationships, friendships and rapport.

Also affected are the good and moral values of young people towards others, which has alarmingly been diminishing over the years. We can say that now, there is an obvious lack of personal human touch.

Worse, children of today speak and act like adults because of their exposure to the internet, which they can access through their smart phones and laptops. Respect, which is supposed to be accorded to parents by their children, seems to have gone with the wind.

We need to put a stop to these alarming incidents. We need to bring good values back, and soon.

How do we do this? We need to reinforce values education, which involves the restoration of what is good in people, with respect to their treatment or interaction with other people.

Values Education should be able to strengthen the moral fiber of people and establish good relationships with others, bound by respect and moral uprightness.

The inculcation of values actually starts at home, but it can also be taught and learned in school. Teachers act as the second parents of students, so they are the ones who should give children guidance and enlightenment.

We should not allow our students to lose their values at a very young age anymore. This practice should end now.

It is never too late to repair the damages. As adults, we are duty bound to always maintain the good values that we have and even strengthen them with proper education of our students.
