-

RUBY A. GIL

The new era calls for the most competent teachers available. Yet, from the age of antiquity up to this period, the definition of competent teachers differs depending on the needs of the global education system. Recently, the term 21st Century Teachers is the latest trend in the academe.

Practically speaking, 21st century teacher is a better version of the previous teachers from content, knowledge, demonstration of skills and others. But what are the specific traits we are looking for.

The main focus of the a 21st century teacher is his or her pupils. In terms of classroom discussion, the application of learner-centered learning is a paramount consideration. Gone are the days when the actual classroom setting focuses more on the teacher alone. The teacher does all of the talking and delivery of knowledge and concepts. The learners are the focus now. They are given opportunities and activities that will make them discover learning by themselves through the guidance of their teachers.

In addition, the application of technology in teaching is also on the list. Learners nowadays are more adept with the technology compared with their own teachers. So, teachers should equip themselves even with the basic competencies in using ICT in the classroom. This motivates the pupils to be actively engaged in the classroom interaction. Yet, powerpoint presentation is not the sole application of ICT that the teacher should know.

Moreover, keeping yourself updated with the latest trend in the academe is another great trait of a 21st century teacher. New knowledge and information are available every day. Reading books, researches, or attending seminars can make the teacher better. The desire to improve oneself is the first step to become one.
