LEARNING ENGLISH SIMPLIFIED
MARY ANN D. YUMUL
English is not only a second language in the Philippines but is also the most common spoken language of the world. Once you learn the language a lot of opportunities opens up for you not only in our country but most importantly overseas. Here are the five simple and practical ways to learn Engl i sh.
1. Don’t be afraid to try and make mistakes. A lot of students do not speak the language because they are afraid to commit mistakes and ridiculed by those who listens to them. Do not mind the grammar at first while you’re learning so long as the ones listening understands your message.
2. Practice makes perfect. EOP or English only policy is a very effective technique in our classroom. This technique should be applied whenever possible to practice one’s English prowess. Be with people who had developed the love for the language, practice with them every day.
3. Meet new words. Have a bulletin board at home where you can write new and unfamiliar words you would like to learn. Make sure to read and expose yourself to these words until they become a part of mental vocabulary.
4. Make learning fun. When watching movies use English subtitles and be mindful of how the words are pronounced and spelled. Listen to music and sing to your heart’s content, this will help you in fluency and intonation.
5. Get some help when you need to. Learning English takes time and does not happen overnight. Ask your teachers and classmates in school, parents and siblings at home to improve and become better English speaker.
