STORY TELLING AS AN INNOVATIVE WAY OF TEACHING

- MIRIAM Q. DAVID

Ensuring that the teaching of lesson can sustain the interest of the learners throughout the day is one of the challenges inside the classroom. Kids are expected to have a short span of interest especially if they are not interested with what is happening around them. So what should a teacher do?

Kids do have an innate interest with stories. They tend to listen to people if the stories being uttered catch their interest and invite them to be active participants in the classroom. As known, stories can bring the learners to new dimension where these children can explore ideas and concepts. In addition, the experiences of the characters can be transferred to these kids as their own experiences. Children mostly learn from other through their eyes and ears. That is why it is very crucial for a teacher to determine what kind of story he or she is going to present to the class. The use of storytelling is a unique way to teach because not everyone has the ability to utter words with life and make the listening moment as realistic as possible.

The benefits of storytelling cannot be underestimated. Its positive promises are really fascinating. It provides opportunities for pupils to explore and understand one’s culture and can related it to their own. If there is a concrete comparison, the chances of remembering the lesson increase. From this perspective, kids can appreciate how people do learn as they live their lives.

In the end, because of their young minds, the entertainment purpose is the main reason for learners to listen during the story telling. They learn without them realizing it.
