HOW TEACHER SPELLS OUT ‘HOME VISIT’

- CAROLINA MATITO ABARIENTOS

The strong collaboration of the school and the parents in the community has been noted as a significant factor that contributes to the holistic development of the learners. As the old African proverb says “it in their child

One of best ways to get parents involved in their child’s education is through home visit. It reveals the interest of the teacher to understand his students better by seeing them in their home environments likewise for the parents to realize how much teacher cares in their child’s education

The success of home visitation depends greatly on the kind of parents the teacher meets. Here are the different kinds of parents as described figuratively:

1. Bumble Bees – the busy parents who find no time to follow-up their child’s performance in the school and giving their child’s allowance is for them being responsible parents.

2. Home Cats – the different parents who show no interest to know what their child does and needs in the school and enrolling their child is for them entrusting the full responsibility to the teachers.

3. Tired Oxen – the overworked parents who put themselves in laborious yet low income jobs to have food on their table and having no extra money left to provide even the little needs of their child in the school.

4. Care Bears – the caring parents who show concern to provide the needs of their child and consistently follow-up their child’s performance in the school yet it seems not enough and being influenced mostly by his peers the child neglect his studies.

5. Creeping Owls – the pragmatic but uneducated parents who admit themselves wise in practical learning’s but unable to assist their child in his academic needs.

It is deemed necessary on the part of the teacher to demonstrate the required adjustment and adaptability to whatever home setting he has reached. Though at times, there are some parents who are unwilling and uncomfortable to meet with the teacher in their home but an effort must be exerted. Bridge the gap by establishing a rapport, introduce yourself and communicate your purpose using home language.

The foundation of the student’s academic success is built through the strong support of the teacher’s administrators and parents. The teachers commitment to bring great changes in the lives of the students is manifested through home visitgetting to know the students in the place they’re most comfortable.
