THE VERSATILITY OF A GRADE ONE TEACHER

- CHARMAINE A. CALMA

As the famous cliché goes, “The least and most persevering teachers in every school are found in Grade One classes or rather should be assigned in Grade One because most of the experts believe that it is at this level that pupils must not only acquire, but rather, master the competencies in Reading, Writing and Arithmetic (3Rs) to be able to move on to the next level.

In addition to this, Grade One pupils must also develop not only the 3 Rs, but also, the basic skills in writing. Hence, the claim that the best, most persevering and patient should really be assigned in Grade One should really be observed. With such notion, First Grade Teachers must live up to the expectations of everyone, that they are really the “cream of the crop” in every school. Hence they must carefully access their pupils to be able to identify the pupils’ levels and their needs to be able to plan appropriate methodologies and utilize strategies and techniques that would address their pupils’ needs. .Moreover, Grade One teacher spend extra hours and energy in giving additional assistance to their pupils who could not perform well or could not even perform what are expected Grade One must also have a big and loving heart for their peupils since these children are just starting to experience formal way of studying, which is very much different from that of the Kindergarten pupils.

Personally, as a Grade One teacher myself, I have always exerted much effort in delivering the best appropriate instruction to my learners by planning for my lessons well and preparing interesting and appropriate Instructional materials. It requires extra energy, patience and love to be a Grade One teacher for it is in this stage that pupils start their formal schooling and they are expected to be competent with the set skills before moving to the next level. They are also expected to be more patient, more persevering and more creative, so they help their pupils develop to the fullest level.

Indeed, Grade One teachers belong to the roaster of the best teachers every school should be proud of who are truly amazing and worth emulating because of their dedication, hardwork and compassion for their learners.
